Twitter me ticked

In Tech in Easy Speak on September 6, 2013 at 10:42 am

I’ve had a twitter account for a really long time. I haven’t ever really used it. I had a project that requires it so I kicked it back up. Over the space of time I have a friend who has been following me for a while. Every so often she would say that my twitter account was sending her spam.

When I would go to my account and look at my history there was only one post I had put up when I was volunteering for a local therapeutic pool. How could I be sending spam when it doesn’t show up in my history?

Share and Share Alike

A  big problem is in working with other people who aren’t necessarily at your location. That means sending copies back and forth email then waiting for the other person to send it back so you can see any changes to it.

Googledocs is a solution for that. It is an online storage for files (but frankly the storage leaves a lot to be desired) Where Googledocs does have it’s use is collaborative work. I can open a document at the same time as some one else and see what changes they are making in real time. It makes the time to finishing much shorter.

What Next Tele-Transfer?

In Tech in Easy Speak on May 19, 2013 at 10:30 pm

I was watching an episode of the show ‘The Big Bang Theory’. Sheldon Kooper, the leading character was talking about the future of tele-transfer of humans over communication modes. He said it would not be an actual transfer of the person, but rather, destruction of the person at one end and totally recreating him on the other end of the communication.

Looking bciruit-boardack at the tremendous growth of email and social communication media in the past 15 years, I would not be surprised if someone does comes up with tele-transfer. I can’t imagine it would be healthy though. They’ve already started to show that EMF waves from wireless does affect the body. I wonder what a total scramble would do.  🙂

Linking In

In Tech in Easy Speak on May 9, 2013 at 2:28 am

In 2009 my friend was touring the Netherlands with his girlfriend who was a journalist. He said it was amazing how illiterate he felt when it came to using these tools of social networking. She already had a Linkedin account, had created her own brand on it and was linking with every other person she met in the Netherlands. Before that experience he was always under the impression online networking was a highly unprofessional method to promote yourself.

Even through the cataclysmic shock of theft of millions of its encrypted passwords in 2012 Linkedin has become a beloved platform of professionals. Curiously enough, I recently found out the Netherlands have the highest per capita adoption rate of Linkedin – next to the United States. Currently every single minute around the clock two new users are added to the Linkedin network. That’s enormous growth for a social networking site, especially for one primarily based on services in the field of professional qualifications. Read the rest of this entry »

I wanted to give a little primer on what happens in that little box on your desk when you go to the internet. Here’s a basic concept. This is not tech… this is just plain english version 🙂

When you turn on your computer the program that runs the computer is called an ‘operating system’. Right now new computers have Windows 8 operating system on them, a little while ago it was Windows XP. If you are techie you can replace Windows with Linux, which is just a different type of operating system. A Mac computer uses a different operating system but they all do the same thing. They tell the computer what to do when you turn it on and use it.

‘Net Neutrality’ is all over the news right now and it can be a confusing term when trying to understand what is happening. What Net Neutrality means is that an Internet service provider can’t pick and choose what you get to see. To make it easier to understand, for the purposes of this article let’s change the term Net Neutrality to ‘Full Access’.

History of the Internet

In Tech in Easy Speak on April 6, 2013 at 9:16 pm

There once was an ant who went to work each day.
One day the ant got a great big box.
Other ants from far away got a big box too.
Sometimes he sat and talked to other ants on the big box.
But mostly, he sat and played cards and ate lunch with his ant friends.
While the big box hummed in the other room.

Over time the ant got a new box that was smaller.
The big box once filled a whole room.
It now fit in a small box under the ant’s desk.
A lot of the other ants got a small box under their desk too.
Most of the day the ant sat and talked to other ants on the small box.

But sometimes he sat and played cards and ate lunch with his ant friends at work.

Blank me up Scottie

In Tech in Easy Speak on April 6, 2013 at 9:11 pm

How many times have you sat down to write a blog post and come up with.. nothing. The blank piece of paper reflects back the blank space in your mind. Personally I don’t work well from an empty page. When I have to do any writing for business I usually ask someone to start it for me. It doesn’t matter what it says or how good it is. Just getting the first words on the paper gives me that push to get started.

Come out of the cave honey

In Tech in Easy Speak on March 22, 2013 at 3:36 am

PLN. I hate acronyms. I remember when I was first starting into computers. The acronyms were overwhelming. So I am not going to talk about PLN. What I am going to talk about is a Personal (or Professional) Learning Network. Or in layman’s terms – my peeps 🙂

I didn’t even realize I had an online learning network until I started reading about it for a project. I have several people that I follow online. One of my favorites is Bob Bare, an expert on business branding and book publishing/writing.

Most of the information I get from him comes email. The interesting thing was that when I just went out to the net and looked him up it took me to a completely different website than what was attached to the email. I actually had to go back to the email to find the site that contained his blog. (I wonder if that was intentional) Anyway, the blog is located here http://bit.ly/15YkIT1.

A lot of his information is under paid subscription only, which I don’t have. But the amount he gives away is definitely worth following. The last one I archived is “How to organize the book you want to write”. I wish I had a whole lot more time to sit and read these things 🙂

Learning a lot!

Another person I like to follow is Arielle Ford, a writer specializing in getting published and becoming a bestselling expert author. Her last link was “How to get on America’s top TV shows”. Fun Stuff.

The thing I ‘ve found Is that my learning network is very one sided. I don’t interact with any of the people I follow, which is pretty much the same in my personal life. I’m actually a hermit. Just no one knows it 😉
